5 Tips For Securing Your Residential Property

Residential Automated GateSecurity is one of the major concerns of any homeowner. Unfortunately, incidents of burglaries continue to rise and burglars have increasingly become smarter while constantly hunting for easy targets. Although it’s not good to be too paranoid, it’s always best to stay one step ahead by taking measures to protect our home and family.

Here are 5 things you can do to increase security in your property.

Install Automated Security Gates

Gates are your first line of defence. Make sure to deter burglars from entering by making it extra hard for them to do so. Gates are not only used for property enhancement but for security too. Choose pedestrian gates and fencing without mid rails to prevent climbing. Install locking mechanisms that can only be opened by key holders to decrease the risk of home invasion.

Illuminate Your Property

Burglaries can take place any time of the day but darkness provides a great cover. Make your house less of a target by making sure it is well-lit, especially outside. Install yard lights near points of entry as well as along pathways and any hiding spots that might offer burglars cover. To provide additional protection, hook up motion detectors on your lights so that they will only light up when motion is detected.

Keep Your House Locked

This may sound obvious but a lot of people forget to lock their doors. Keep all doors locked whether you’re at home or not. Double dead bolt type locks on doors are helpful but you can also prevent access with the use of magnetic swipe cards or wireless keypads. Don’t forget your windows too. If possible, upgrade them with burglar-proof glass or at least install some locks on them as well.

Install a Security System

Security systems don’t stop burglaries but it will make your home less likely to be targeted if you use them right. Display your alarm system in plain sight to discourage burglars from breaking in. In case something happens, alarms will also enable you to receive help faster. You can also have an audio intercom system installed. These intercoms allow you to check who your visitors are by speaking to them without having to open the door. Alternatively, you can also use a video intercom system, which enables you to view your visitors from a screen.

At this day and age, it is quite common to see people posting photos and status updates about their whereabouts on social media such as on Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram. However, what they sometimes fail to realise is that they can’t always control who can gain access to that information. Social media can be used by burglars to stalk you in order to find out when you’re on vacation and until when. This gives them enough information to plan for a home invasion with less chances of being detected. Err on the side of caution and keep mum on your vacation plans.
